Travelers looking to explore new international destinations now have a fresh and affordable option. Mexican airline Volaris has officially launched a new direct route connecting Tulum, Quintana Roo, with San José, Costa Rica—strengthening regional connectivity and expanding its reach in Central America.

Starting immediately, the Tulum–San José route will operate four times a week: on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The airline aims to make travel between Mexico and Costa Rica more accessible, catering to both leisure and business travelers, while promoting cultural and economic exchange between the two countries.

This new addition is part of Volaris’ broader expansion strategy in Central America. Known for its low-cost fares and modern fleet, the airline is focused on linking key destinations across the region. According to airline officials, the direct route between two of the region’s most popular tourist hubs will bring major benefits to local economies and strengthen tourism on both sides.

With this launch, Volaris now offers 20 domestic and international routes from the state of Quintana Roo, operating out of both Cancún and the newly opened Tulum International Airport. Since 2006, the airline has transported over 42.6 million passengers through the region.

Jorge Roberto García Rojas, Director of Distribution and Market Development at Volaris, said the new connection brings together “two of the most iconic tourist destinations in the region” and is expected to further boost local development and travel opportunities.

Volaris began its Costa Rican operations in 2016 and has since flown more than 2.5 million passengers through six active routes connecting Costa Rica with Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico City, Cancún, Guadalajara, and Los Angeles (via a stop in Guatemala).

Looking ahead, Volaris plans to continue its expansion into the U.S. market, with upcoming routes from Costa Rica to Orlando and Miami.

As Tulum Airport adds more international destinations to its map, this new Costa Rica connection reinforces the city’s growing importance as a key gateway for tourism and regional air travel.
