In a bold move to solidify its reputation as a leader in eco-tourism, Tulum has launched a campaign to certify more of its coastline with nationally and internationally recognized environmental seals. For 2025, the municipality aims to achieve five Platinum Beach certifications and earn the White Flag (Playa Limpia Sustentable) status for three popular beaches.

According to Juan Antonio Garza, director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) in Tulum, the effort focuses on three key beaches located within Tulum National ParkPescadores, Maya, and Santa Fe—as well as a fourth already certified beach in Akumal, known as DIF Aventuras. The ambitious plan also includes a fifth beach, Playa Mangle, which is currently under review and expected to receive Platinum Beach status later this year.

To obtain the White Flag certification, Tulum must meet strict environmental standards established under NOM-020-Semarnat, a regulation from Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. Requirements include clear demarcation of swimming zones, proper signage, and regular water quality testing to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both residents and tourists.

“These designations are about more than just recognition,” Garza explained. “They represent our commitment to sustainable beach management and to offering visitors clean, safe, and fully equipped coastal areas.”

In addition to environmental quality, the targeted beaches are being equipped with vital amenities such as public restrooms, lifeguard towers, water fountains, and shaded rest areas. These services aim to elevate the visitor experience while aligning with the standards needed for certification.

Beyond national recognition, Tulum is also pursuing the prestigious Blue Flag certification, an internationally respected award given by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). This global accolade honors beaches, marinas, and tourist vessels that meet rigorous standards for environmental education, water quality, safety, and accessibility.

With its turquoise waters, natural beauty, and renewed focus on responsible tourism, Tulum is positioning itself as a model for eco-conscious destinations across Mexico. These efforts not only enhance the tourist experience but also promote environmental awareness and long-term coastal conservation.

As 2025 unfolds, Tulum’s beaches may soon shine even brighter—not just for their natural allure, but for their commitment to sustainability and excellence.
