Tulum Gets Its First Full-Service Hospital, With Round-the-Clock Emergency Care

Tulum is getting the kind of infrastructure that residents and property owners have wanted for years. On July 22, Grupo Medico Joya broke ground on Hospital Joya Tulum, a full-service private hospital on Avenida Coba, next to the Holiday Inn. The investment tops 350 million pesos, and the group expects to open the doors in December 2026.

Governor Mara Lezama led the groundbreaking alongside Julio Carbajal, founding partner and vice president of operations, and Jorge Moreno Balcazar, the group's director of business and expansion. Moreno Balcazar said the complex was designed to serve both the people who live in Tulum and the millions who visit each year. Lezama framed the start of construction as more than concrete and steel, describing it as a commitment to families who will now have somewhere closer to turn when they need care quickly.

What the hospital will hold

The numbers behind it are substantial. The hospital will cover more than 9,000 square meters on Avenida Coba, one of the main arteries running through town. Inside, it will run a 24-hour emergency unit, a shock room for critical trauma, two operating theatres, an intensive care unit, and an isolation room. It will hold 15 patient rooms and 16 consulting offices, along with a clinical laboratory, an imaging department, and an on-site pharmacy. A full specialist team is planned to staff it.

For a town that has long sent serious cases up the highway, that combination matters. Until now, anyone in Tulum facing a real emergency, a complicated birth, or a case needing intensive care has faced a drive north to Playa del Carmen or Cancun, roughly an hour or more depending on traffic and the hour of night. A round-the-clock emergency room with surgical and intensive-care capacity on Avenida Coba changes that equation for the roughly 50,000 people who live in the municipality full time, and for the visitors who fill its hotels and rentals through the year.

An operator with a track record

The project also connects Tulum to an established hospital group rather than a first-time venture. Grupo Medico Joya traces back to Puerto Vallarta, where it opened Hospital Joya Marina in 2000, described at the time as the first tertiary-care hospital in a Mexican tourist destination. The group added Hospital Joya Riviera in 2011 to meet demand from both residents and international visitors, and has expanded steadily since.

Today the network runs hospitals, medical units, and diagnostic centers across the country, in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit, Guadalajara, Queretaro, San Miguel de Allende, Manzanillo, and Mexico City. Its Cancun hospital, opened in the hotel zone, reported roughly 300 percent growth in patient intake within two years of opening, a sign of how quickly demand has built along the Caribbean coast. Tulum had been named as a target for expansion for some time, and the July groundbreaking turned that plan into a construction site.

Health as infrastructure, and as an economy

The state has been open about the second motive behind the investment. Lezama tied the hospital to what officials call medical tourism, the practice of visitors combining a trip with a medical or dental procedure. Quintana Roo has become one of Mexico's stronger markets for it, helped by its air connectivity to the United States and Canada and by a visitor base skewed younger than traditional medical-tourism hubs. A specialist hospital in Tulum extends that map further south, and gives the destination a service it has lacked while its population and visitor numbers climbed.

Its reach is expected to extend past the municipality itself. Officials said the hospital will also serve nearby communities in the center and south of the state, including Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Bacalar, areas that have even fewer options for specialized care than Tulum has had.

Access to serious medical care has long meant a drive north to Playa del Carmen or Cancun, a real constraint in a town that has grown as fast as this one. A specialist hospital on Avenida Coba, with emergency and intensive care and an opening set for December, narrows that distance considerably. Construction has started, the operator has done this before in comparable markets, and the timeline puts the first patients inside the year.
