Eight International Routes Are Coming Back to Tulum for the Winter

Tulum's airport is heading into its busiest months with real momentum behind it. Eight international routes are coming back for the 2026-2027 high season, restoring nonstop service from five cities across the United States and Canada and giving the terminal its strongest foreign schedule in a year. United, Air Canada, Air Transat and WestJet are all returning to Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, and state tourism officials, who confirmed the news after meeting with the airport's operators, read it as a clear signal that the carriers are betting on the destination again.

This is the international side of the schedule rebuilding, the flights that bring the North American visitors who fill Tulum's hotels and restaurants, and it is a separate story from the domestic and Maya Train links that move travelers within Mexico. For a foreign network that thinned out over the past year, eight routes arriving at once is the most encouraging news the airport has had in some time.

The most striking part of the comeback is who is driving it. Four of the five returning cities are Canadian, with Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City and Calgary leading the way and Newark holding the American side. That reflects a genuine loyalty rather than an accident of scheduling. Canadian leisure carriers have been the steadiest friends Tulum's airport has, and their whole winter business is built around bringing sun-seekers south on dependable seasonal blocks. While others came and went, the Canadians kept showing up, and this winter they form the backbone of the destination's link to the north.

Air Canada is leading from the front. It brings Toronto back on October 25 and Montreal on October 29, and holds both routes open until the end of March 2027, close to five months of continuous service and the deepest commitment in the group. Air Transat adds Montreal and Quebec City, and WestJet flies from Calgary and its eastern Canadian hubs, both carriers running the autumn-to-April rhythm they have kept in past seasons. Their firm start dates are still to come, but the shape of the winter is already clear.

United rounds out the list on the American side, with Newark service running from December 17 to January 24, a route built to carry the Christmas and New Year rush at the very peak of the season. It joins four year-round United States routes that never left and keep Tulum connected through every month of the year: American Airlines from Dallas Fort Worth and Miami, Delta from Atlanta, and United from Houston. Between the steady American hubs and the returning seasonal flights, travelers heading to Tulum this winter have more nonstop choices than they did a season ago.

A strong season, honestly measured

The gain is real, and it is worth seeing in full context. Tulum's airport is young, opened on December 1, 2023, and it has grown quickly, handling 1.24 million travelers in its first full calendar year. Like any new airport finding its footing, it has had an uneven stretch. Its international network had slimmed to four routes by the middle of this year, and first-quarter international arrivals came in below the same period of 2025. The eight returning routes do not erase that chapter, and they are seasonal rather than year-round. What they do is put the high season on firmer ground than it has stood on in a while, and hand the airport a strong platform to build the next stage of its recovery from.

The reasons for the earlier slowdown were never any one thing, and most of them are already being addressed. The state's wider push on security, the serious new federal program tackling sargassum, and the steady work on the cost of ground transport between the terminal and the hotel zone all point the same direction. Each one that improves makes the case for airlines to stay a little easier to make.

For now, the season ahead looks bright. The high months are well covered, the carriers that know Tulum best are returning in force, and the first of the eight flights is already on the calendar. On October 25, Air Canada's service from Toronto touches down as the season's opening international arrival, the first sign of a winter that is shaping up far better than the year behind it.
