The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has reopened the Xel-Há Archaeological Zone in the municipality of Tulum, welcoming visitors again on July 6, 2026 after roughly a year of restoration work. This is not the well-known Xel-Há eco-park across the highway, which has stayed open throughout. It is the ancient Maya settlement of the same name, a short distance away and far less visited.

According to Margarito Molina Rendón, director of the INAH Quintana Roo Centre, Xel-Há was the last of eleven sites to reopen under the state's Archaeological Zone Improvement Program, known as Promeza. The work focused on conserving the monuments themselves, along with improvements to visitor infrastructure, trails, and signage. "Now, visitors will have a better experience on their tours," Molina Rendón said.

Long before the walled fortress of Tulum rose along the coast, Xel-Há was a working Maya port. Its name comes from the Mayan words for water and spring, a reference to the freshwater cenotes that meet the sea at this inlet. That natural harbour made the settlement a centre for coastal trade, a shelter for sailors, and a stop for pilgrims travelling to the island of Cozumel. The earliest occupation of the site dates back roughly two thousand years, with building continuing in later periods until the arrival of the Spanish in the 1520s.

Among the surviving structures is the House of Birds, named for a preserved mural of birds painted in various poses, with further painted panels and a figure in a feathered headdress. Two cenotes sit within the site itself. Because it draws a fraction of the visitors that the nearby Tulum ruins do, it offers a quieter way to explore the area's heritage without the crowds.

The reopening comes alongside two new museums created as part of the Maya Train project: the Regional Museum of the Eastern Coast of Tulum and the Historical Museum of the City of Felipe Carrillo Puerto. For anyone spending time in the area, the three sites now make an easy half-day inland, well away from the coast.
