Tulum Takes Center Stage in Mexico’s Plan for Sustainable Growth and Global Events

Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, met with Governor Mara Lezama during a working tour across Cancun and Tulum to coordinate new actions aimed at strengthening tourism promotion, sustainability, and public beach access throughout Quintana Roo.
The meetings brought together key figures from the private sector, including members of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) and the Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres, underscoring the importance of continuous collaboration between federal, state, and local authorities with industry leaders. The goal, Rodríguez Zamora emphasized, is to reinforce Mexico’s position as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations through long-term, sustainable growth.
Strengthening Tourism and Guaranteeing Public Beach Access
During her visit to Tulum, Rodríguez Zamora led a second round of discussions with hoteliers, local business owners, and tourism service providers. The focus: advancing a comprehensive strategy that integrates urban planning, improved infrastructure, and environmental protection as pillars of development.
“We are committed to ensuring free and responsible access to Tulum’s beaches while promoting a model of tourism that benefits both local residents and visitors,” Rodríguez Zamora stated during the session.
Federal and municipal authorities have begun identifying public beach access points and prioritizing infrastructure works that will allow residents and tourists to enjoy the coastline in a sustainable and equitable way.
Tulum’s Growing Role in Mexico’s Tourism Strategy
Governor Mara Lezama reaffirmed that Tulum has become a key anchor in Quintana Roo’s tourism vision — a destination transitioning toward a more sustainable, inclusive, and environmentally conscious future.
As part of the 2026 Tourism Strategy, Tulum’s profile will continue to grow alongside major international events such as the FIFA World Cup, for which Cancún will serve as a logistical and touristic hub. The region’s air connectivity and expanding hospitality infrastructure position it to benefit directly from the expected surge in global travelers.
This alignment between federal and state tourism authorities marks an important step in balancing growth with conservation, ensuring that development in the Riviera Maya continues to support both its people and its natural heritage — reinforcing Tulum’s place at the forefront of Mexico’s sustainable tourism future.
